ISO 45001: 2018
Occupational Health & Safety Management System
At NurseLink Healthcare, caring for our clients is inseparable from caring for our team. Whether we are delivering home care, community nursing, or NDIS in-home support, a safe and healthy workplace is non-negotiable.
That is why we have adopted an Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS) aligned with ISO 45001:2018.
This internationally recognised standard guides us to identify hazards, eliminate or control risks, and continually improve the way we protect both clients and staff.
What ISO 45001:2018 means for our agency

As a nursing and disability-support agency, we often work in higher-risk environments—client homes, aged-care facilities and community settings—where we provide personal care, move and lift equipment, and support people with complex or chronic conditions.
ISO 45001:2018 gives us a structured framework to manage those risks through:
- Structured risk management – We identify potential hazards such as infection, manual-handling injuries, falls, ergonomic stress and exposure to chemicals or biological agents. Risks are assessed and controls implemented to reduce or remove them.
- Clear safety policies and procedures – From infection control and incident reporting to safe travel to client homes, our documented procedures are designed to protect everyone involved in care.
- Employee participation and consultation – Nurses, carers and support staff are actively consulted and involved in safety decisions.
Their frontline insight ensures our policies work in real settings. - Training and competence – Every team member receives role-appropriate health and safety training—manual handling, body mechanics, infection control and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Performance measurement and continuous improvement – Incidents, near misses and audit results are monitored and reviewed so lessons learned feed back into improved policies and practices.
How ISO 45001:2018 supports Australian law
ISO 45001:2018 is a voluntary standard, but its requirements closely reflect Australia’s Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws—including the Model WHS Act and Regulations and each state or territory’s OHS legislation
How we put ISO 45001:2018 into practice
Risk assessment and prevention
- Each new client environment—whether a private home or a residential facility—is assessed for hazards.
- We check for tripping risks, lighting, space for equipment and possible exposure to infectious diseases.
- Where hazards are found, we introduce controls such as assistive devices, PPE or environmental modifications.
Infection control and PPE
- Because our work often involves close personal care—wound care, hygiene assistance, dementia support—we maintain strict infection-control protocols.
- Staff are trained in proper hand hygiene, use of gloves and masks, and safe disposal of sharps. We ensure appropriate PPE is always available and correctly used.
Manual handling and ergonomics
- Moving or repositioning clients and equipment carries risk.
- Our staff receive regular training in safe manual-handling techniques and the correct use of hoists and lifting aids.
- Equipment is inspected and maintained to meet safety standards.
Incident reporting and investigation
- Any incident or near miss—such as falls or medication errors—is recorded and investigated to identify root causes.
- Corrective actions are taken promptly to prevent recurrence.
Employee wellbeing
- ISO 45001:2018 recognises that stress and fatigue are safety hazards.
- We support our team with mental-health resources, fair rostering, rest breaks and open supervision so they can deliver care confidently and safely.
Emergency and response planning
- Each work location has clear emergency procedures.
- Home-visit staff are trained to escalate medical emergencies, fires or natural disasters and to access backup support quickly.
Supplier and contractor safety
When engaging contractors or suppliers (for example, medical equipment providers or cleaners), we include safety requirements in contracts and monitor their compliance.
Benefits for clients, staff and stakeholders
- For clients and NDIS participants – safer care, lower risk of accidents or infection and confidence in the professionalism of our team.
- For staff – clear expectations, safe working conditions, better training and stronger engagement.
- For families and carers – peace of mind that a recognised best-practice safety framework protects everyone involved.
- For the organisation – reduced injury-related costs, lower insurance premiums, stronger legal protection and a reputation for excellence in care.
Governance, monitoring and continuous improvement
To maintain our ISO 45001:2018 system, NurseLink Healthcare has put in place:
- A safety management committee including management, clinical leaders and staff representatives.
- Regular internal and external safety audits.
- Key performance metrics such as incident rates, days lost to injury and client safety indicators.
- Policy reviews whenever regulations or care practices change.
- Staff feedback channels—surveys and meetings—to capture ideas for further safety improvements.
